Day 11: Turning point in your life / Día 11: Punto de giro en tu vida

2007 was a year very radical for my life. A lot of things happened, mostly bad things. The hardest one was to say "see you soon" to my favorite person in the hole world: my aunt Vivi. I miss you so much!

El año 2007 fue un año radical en mi vida. Pasaron bastantes cosas, en su mayoría malas. La más difícil de todas fue decirle "hasta pronto" a mi persona favorita en todo el mundo: mi tía Vivi. ¡Te extraño mucho!

Day 12: Most recent accomplishment / Día 12: Logro más reciente

My most recent accomplishment was to deal one of the most hot summer days in Buenos Aires, and being brave enough to take a long trip by bus to La Boca neighborhood to finally meet the Fundación PROA. Totally worth it!

Mi logro más reciente fue enfrentar uno de los días más calurosos de Buenos Aires, y animarme a un viaje larguísimo hasta el barrio de la Boca para conocer de una vez por todas la Fundación PROA. Definitivamente, ¡valió la pena!

Day 13: Comic / Día 13: Historieta

I'm lack of money lately, so I've decided that for my birthday I wasn't going to make any celebration with my family, only to visit my parents and my little brother. But when I entered in their house, I found out that my parents had organized a surprise little lovely dinner with my granma, my uncle and my cousins. The funny part was that when I entered my parents' house my husband and I saw that there were a lot of glasses, the surprise was revealed! :)

Estoy con muy poco dinero, así que había decidido por mi cumpleaños no hacer ningún festejo con la familia, sólo visitar a mis papás y a mi hermanito. Pero cuando entré a la casa de ellos, me encontré con la sorpresa de que mis papás me habían organizado una mini-fiesta sorpresa, una lindísima cena junto a mi abuela, mi tío y mis primas. El detalle cómico fue que al entrar a la casa de ellos vimos que habían puesto un montón de copas en la mesita, ¡adelantando la sorpresa! :)

When I was a child I remember seing "My neighbor Totoro" at HBO channel. I was so impressed of the gestures of the two little girls of the movie, so amazing animation! And the cat-bus haha amazing. :)
I really recommend this film, you'll have a weekend task if you've never seen it. And if you have, then it's a great opportunity to watch it again. :)

Today we have a gray sky in Buenos Aires, it's about to rain. The atmosphere reminds me to this artwork from Alfred Sisley (see picture above). I saw this painting last weekend at the National Fine Arts Museum and I really liked how it shows the heavy sensation of the gray sky.
The pic is so tiny, sorry! I couldn't find a bigger one.

Cuando era chiquita recuerdo ver "Mi vecino Totoro" en el canal HBO. Me impresionaba mucho los gestos de las dos nenas de la película, ¡qué increíble la animación! Y el gato-autobús jajaj era genial. :)
Recomiendo muchísimo esta película, así que van a tener una tarea de fin de semana si nunca la vieron. Y si ya la vieron, entonces es una gran oportunidad para verla otra vez. :)

Hoy hay un cielo gris en Buenos Aires, está a punto de llover. La atmósfera me hace acordar a este cuadro de Alfred Sisley. Esta pintura la vi el fin de semana en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes y me gustó muchísimo cómo transmite esa sensación pesada del cielo gris.
Está muy chiquita la imagen, ¡perdón! No conseguí ninguna más grande.

About our illustration path

I just finished my reading of the #2 e-zine of Pikaland, and there was a text in particular that made me think.

Linda Solovic is an illustrator and teacher at Washington University. In her text at the e-zine, she tells that her students constantly ask for questions about the "personal style" in illustration.

Being brief, she tells that she usually tell her students that is logic to search for inspiration in other artist's work and that makes an influence in the personal style. But with time, and hours of practice, practice and more practice "those influences begins to drop by the wayside and your own sense of design and drawing become more apparent".

And here comes what was, for me, a key concept:

"I also tell them that the artwork they make should come naturally to them, if you are drawing or making art in a way you feel that you are always struggling to make it work, that could be a sign that you are on the wrong path. Your artwork should feel like it flows from you and brings you joy." - Linda Solovic

Thinking about my own history with illustration, I feel that in a moment in particular, I believe it was when I was finishing high school and starting university, I was searching to fit in a comic-book kind of style. This was very structured for me and all the time I was fighting with the realistic human figure. The act of drawing stop being a joy for me. And with the new responsabilities of being a university student (and after that, to work and study at the same time), I found a good excuse for stop drawing: the lack of time.

But now looking back I can recognise that I made the mistake that Linda mentions in her text.  I was trying to fit in a kind of illustration that it's not natural for me. After years and years of looking at artists I admire in the internet, now I can realice that's the path I want for me. A more free and expressive kind of illustration.

I'm sure that comic-books will always be a great influence for me, because they were in my life since I was a child, but now I know that won't be the only influence, or the only way to illustrate.

For start this new path, I decided which will be my next automated project. I'll continue with the 30 Day Drawing Challenge. Is a short and funny illustration project. So has all the things I wanted for my next project. :)

Terminé de leer la revista #2 de Pikaland, y hubo un texto en particular que me dejó pensando.

Linda Solovic es ilustradora y profesora en la Universidad de Washington. En su aporte a la revista de Pikaland, ella cuenta que sus alumnos constantemente le hacen preguntas referidas al "estilo" a la hora de ilustrar.

En resumen, ella cuenta que suele decirle a sus alumnos que es lógico buscar inspiración en el trabajo de otros artistas y que eso influye en el estilo propio. Pero con el pasar del tiempo, y horas de practicar practicar y practicar las influencias de a poco se van corriendo y se va haciendo más evidente cuál es nuestra propia visión sobre cómo debemos ilustrar.

Y recién ahora viene lo que fue, para mi, un concepto clave:

"También les digo que las piezas artísticas que ellos crean deberían venir naturalmente a ellos, si estás dibujando o creando arte en una forma que sentís que estás siempre luchando para que funcione, eso podría ser un signo de que estás siguiendo el camino incorrecto. Tus piezas artísticas deberían sentirse como que fluyen desde vos y te dan alegría". -Linda Solovic.

Pensando en mi propia historia con el dibujo, siento que a partir de un momento, creo que cuando estaba terminando la escuela secundaria y empezando la facultad, buscaba estructurarme en un estilo de dibujo relacionado con el dibujo de historieta, que si bien no deja de ser caricaturesco, a mí me resultaba súper estructurado y luchaba todo el tiempo con las proporciones de la figura humana. El dibujar dejó de ser un acto placentero para mí, y con las nuevas responsabilidades que significa la universidad (y posteriormente, trabajar y estudiar a la vez) encontré una buena excusa para dejar de dibujar: la falta de tiempo.

Pero ahora mirando para atrás reconozco que cometí el error que Linda menciona en su texto. Estaba buscando encasillarme en un tipo de dibujo que no es el que me sale naturalmente. Después de años y años de mirar en internet el trabajo de artistas que admiro, recién ahora me doy cuenta que ese camino es el que yo quiero para mí. Un dibujo más libre, más expresivo.

Seguramente las historietas sean una influencia muy grande para mí porque estuvieron desde siempre en mi vida, pero ahora sé que no será la única influencia, ni la única forma posible para ilustrar.

Y para empezar este nuevo camino, finalmente terminé de definir cuál va a ser mi próximo proyecto automatizado. Voy a retomar el 30 Day Drawing Challenge (El desafío de 30 días dibujando). Es un proyecto corto, divertido y centrado en la ilustración. Así que cumple todo lo que quiero hacer. :)

Great advice for Illustrators

I didn't decided yet in which automated project I'll be working (remind the inspiration post by Kate Bingamang Burt), but I did decided that will be something to do with illustration.
As a first step, I was interested in finally buy one of the magazines that Amy made for Pikaland, the beautiful illustration website. She offer these e-zines in print edition or in a PDF for download.
The issue I chose is the one from the image above. "When does one know that a personal style has developed? Is it important to know what exactly that style is?". I just bought the PDF version and I'm just printing it.
In a few days I'll tell you how it went! :)

Todavía no decidí cuál va a ser mi próximo proyecto automático (ver el post inspiración de Kate Bingamang Burt), pero la decisión que sí tomé es que va a ser algo relacionado a la ilustración.
Como un primer paso, me interesó concretar un deseo que tengo hace algunos meses de comprar una de las revistas que realizó Amy para Pikaland, el hermoso portal de ilustración. Ofrece estas revistas en versión impresa o en PDF.
La edición que elegí es la de la imagen de arriba, "¿Cómo sabe uno que desarrolló un estilo personal? ¿Es importante saber cómo es exactamente el estilo?".  Acabo de comprar la versión PDF y la estoy imprimiendo en este momento.
¡Después les cuento qué tal me fue! :)
